Professional Practice
It is important to document clinical and dialogue information for all narcotic prescriptions.
When necessary, pharmacist should use the Opiod Manager worksheet to help guide the management of patients on narcotic treatment.
To ensure documentation is done, the Pharmacy Manager will print a list of narcotic prescription and randomly review prescriptions every three months. Any issues will be review during the quarterly pharmacist meeting.
NMS
The Narcotic Monitoring System (NMS) is a tool implemented by the government to monitor narcotic and controlled drug usage.
When narcotic or controlled drugs are dispensed, staff must ask patients provide approved identification. This information is to be added to the patients file in Nexxsys in the 3rd Party tab. When prescriptions are processed, this ID information is sent to the NMS. This action is performed by Nexxsys in a similar manner to adjudication to a third party
Vet prescriptions are not processed through NMS
